Testing the Claims of Loba Stain

Introduction to Loba’s Alternative Stain

In the previous Pro Shop Talk conversation, Loba technical manager, Micah introduced us to several benefits of using Loba stain. As an alcohol-based alternative to traditional solvent-based oil stains, Loba stain has some “stand-out” features that we put to the test. Primarily, the claim of a 1-hour dry time, makes it an efficient option for quickly staining floors. We will be sharing our experience with applying this stain to a test panel and discussing the results. Additionally, we will provide insights into the application process, the unique characteristics of the stain, and how it compares to traditional oil-based stains.

Application and Initial Observations

Applying Loba’s alternative stain was a fairly straightforward process. Initially, it involved cutting in around the walls with a rag and then buffing the floors to blend the stain.

Here are some initial observations:

Application Process:

  • Applying the alcohol-based stain was mostly standard, following the typical wipe-on, wipe-off method.
  • Using a rag along the edges worked well and did not “load” with a lot of liquid, making the cut-in process more efficient.
  • Granted, there was a noticeable alcohol odor when opening the can and during application. We recommend wearing an appropriate respirator and eye protection.

Buffing and Blending:

  • The stain dried more quickly than when using traditional solvent-based stains, making the buffing process a bit different.
  • When applying stain with a buffing pad, it quickly dried. This required more frequent stops to reapply more stain to continue blending.
  • The buffer pad used to apply the stain also helped remove extra pigment eliminating the need to change pads frequently.

Results and Color:

  • After just an hour, the stain was dry to the touch, with no visible lap lines or color pull observed.
  • Initially, after application the stain appears dry and chalky. However, the color popped after applying a sealer coat and resulted in a vibrant rich look.

Repairs and Blending

After applying Loba’s alternative stain, we observed how easy it was to repair and blend the product. Jump to see this segment here.

Repairing Intentional Errors:

In testing making a repair, we intentionally made marks, left heavy drips, and buffer marks on the floor. Using the same stain and a rag and a bit of stain, we gently wiped these areas and it blended seamlessly with the rest of the stain. Truly, Micah’s claim was validated. Incredibly, problem areas were easy to repair whether left on purpose or by accident.

Unintentional Errors and Thirsty Areas:

Dry thirsty spot with light stain coverage

After applying using a buffer pad we noticed some unintentional lighter stained areas where the stain did not apply evenly. This meant the blotchy, dry spots would need reapplication. Again, using the same stain and a rag, we applied more stain and blended with a buffer and pad. The process was simple and the color blended seamlessly, making the entire process effortless to correct even accidental missed spots.

Addressing Bleed Back

Unfortunately, unfilled gaps in the flooring resulted in some bleed back of stain in certain areas. We easily blended in the stain pull using the same stain and a rag. Easily, the reactivated stain in the affected areas blended right in without any hassle.

After repairing all errors, the color looked even throughout, and any inconsistencies were easily corrected. Just by applying more Loba stain, shows the excellent blendability and repair capabilities of Loba’s alternative stain.

Final Review and Recommendations

After conducting a thorough test and application of Loba’s alternative stain, the key takeaways and recommendations are:

  1. The application process was straightforward and efficient, with a standard wipe-on, wipe-off method.
  2. The alcohol-based stain dried quickly, allowing for a seamless and smooth blending process.
  3. Initially, the dry and chalky appearance of the stain was easily rectified once the sealer was applied, resulting in a vibrant and desirable outcome.

Key Characteristics:

  • The quick drying time of 1 hour was accurate, allowing for a rapid return to the floor to start the coating process.
  • The ability to blend and repair Loba’s alternative stain are exceptional. Seemingly, with little effort, correcting all kinds of errors are no problem.
  • Eventually, the alcohol smell dissipates and the applied stain looks vibrant after applying the sealer.
